Actress Hayley Atwell renews her role of Agent Peggy Carter in the first episode of What If...? with a twist: what if Agent Carter took the serum instead of Steve Rogers and became a supersoldier? Director Bryna Adams was left wanting more from Atwell's new superhero.
A tight-knit interconnected universe has served as the backbone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has served as one of the studio's greatest successes. 24 movies and shows that bind into one another create a relatively digestible timeline. Marvel, with the help of their animated series What If...? (2021-) asks "what if?" there were alternatives to established characters. Adams is confident that Captain Carter would succeed in her own live-action movie.
"I know A.C. and I feel totally the same in this, and while we don’t know if this is necessarily going to happen, it would be amazing if they would just do a Captain Carter movie," Andrews told The Hollywood Reporter. "Just get Hayley Atwell in the suit, give her her own franchise and just have her blow doors like hells to the yeah."
Carter's recurrence in What If...? through subsequent seasons of the show was revealed by series producer Brad Winderbaum through comments made during a press conference. “We realized, I think, early on in development as we were starting to get AC [Bradley's] scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important," Winderbaum said at the time. "Not more important than the rest, but had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter."
Marvel's What If...? is an anthology-style animation series that features beloved Marvel characters in new universes, and sometimes, with new alter-egos. What If...? is to stream through Disney+ starting on August 11.
