'The Lord of the Rings' Series Announces Story and Setting

Amazon Studios announced that they would bring the vast and ever-sprawling universe of J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series to small screens, leaving fans to wonder just what the series would explore.

TheOneRing unveils the inner workings of the series, confirming that it is to be set during the Second Age of Middle-Earth while following an ensemble of characters, in which TheOneRing makes the claim that alongside new faces, old faces will return to the series. Seeing that "The Lord of the Rings" is a working title and that Amazon Studios has not yet officially named their series, there is no telling who may appear just yet.

"Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone," TheOneRing said, summarizing what is to come for the untitled series.

Fans, who have been curious about what the plot may entail also pose the same question about which characters are to make their small-screen arrival. Due to the timeline that is presented, there are questions raised surrounding the possibilities of well-known "mortal" characters becoming involved in the show. In regards to how much time will be spent with established characters on screen, has yet to be known. Two seasons have been ordered for The Lord of the Rings series, which is still waiting for a release date.
