The emotionally driven and stylistically striking finale of Disney and Lucasfilm's severely popular series, The Mandalorian, has thrilled life-long Star Wars fans and delighted newcomers to the franchise. Perhaps seeing the return of a particular Jedi, or calling back to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's most prominent scenes might have given viewers a jolt, but a certain bounty hunter shocked a fanbase to their core after the credits stopped rolling.
The Book of Boba Fett was formally announced during a post-credit scene, where Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) unleash their fury on Jabba's Palace after paying a visit to Tatooine, where a once-reigning Bib Fortuna is dethroned. Fett takes his place on Fortuna's throne with Shand at his side before the title card for the new series fills the screen.
Set to air on Disney+ in December 2021, there are still many unanswered questions about The Book of Boba Fett, which effortlessly put a bow on a compulsive second season of The Mandalorian. Fett, a popular character that has been woven into the sci-fi series' endless lore, seems to be set up to take the reins of Tatooine. He may be a simple man making his way across the galaxy, but this position of power could be quite advantageous for someone of his ability.
The infantry of the news may ignite excitement across the internet, though there is still no word from Disney nor Lucasfilm as to further any details surrounding Fett's one-off tales. Despite the presentation of the show, The Book of Boba Fett does not appear to override The Mandalorian, nor does it engage itself to be the series' third season. Being Disney+'s flagship show, there is no need to step on any toes nor to override any pre-existing titles. Drastically shifting the focal point of The Mandalorian after extreme success would be a rather foolish decision.
The Mandalorian puts a bookmark in a chapter for the protagonist Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu (or 'Baby Yoda,' if you will), and their journey. The conclusive period and emotional departure do not seem like the smoothest transition to drive into Fett's suspected Tatooine conquest, but more of a placeholder until the Djarin's and Grogu's story is resumed.
Disney does not seem to yield when it comes to expanding their programming and production roster, and it could be plausible that both The Mandalorian as well as The Book of Boba Fett will share the December 2021 premier slot. This could also allow both series to co-exist while being comfortably aware of each other. With fewer gaps between upcoming Disney and Lucasfilm series and shows, The Book of Boba Fett may be bigger than expected.
