Contrary to the final minutes in Avengers: Endgame (2019) insinuating some major changes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Sam "Falcon" Wilson (Anthony Mackie) accepting the Captain America shield, everything may not be what it seems.

Mackie suggested that it might not be him who will take on the mantle in the upcoming The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021-) series, where he teams up with Bucky "the Winter Soldier" Barnes (Sebastian Stan) facing the world post-Endgame. Specifics for the series are still kept under wraps, but it's presumable to see Wilson grapple with his identity, the legacy of Captain America, and the consequences of Steve "Captain America" Rogers (Chris Evans) choosing the past over the present.

When asked if Wilson is now Captain America while entering the new series, Mackie had replied with "no, we don't know that yet," during an interview with SiriusXM. However, he did confirm that the show will explore deeper who will take up the shield in the wake of Captain America's retirement.

“No, we don’t know that yet. The show, the idea of the show is basically, you know, and at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time, did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America…so, the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who's going to be Captain America if Steve isn't coming back," Mackie said.

From what Marvel Studios has teased about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it looks like the U.S. Government has other plans for who they'd like to see become the new Captain, parading John "U.S. Agent" Walker (Wyatt Russell) around in a similarly spangled costume.

Phase 4 of the MCU is quick to arrive, quenching the drought of Marvel productions for the first time since 2009. Now that titles are being shuffled around and changes will be made, a page is turned for Marvel and their storytelling. Marvel's newest Disney+ show could feature a new Captain America, but it won't come without conflict.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiers on Disney+ on March 19, 2021.
