'Percy Jackson' Creator Weighs in on Disney+ Series

Overlooking the failed Percy Jackson and the Olympian (2010-2013) film series, Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2021-) television series seems to be much more promising, according to comments from series creator and author Rick Riordan.

Both Percy Jackson movies were products of 20th Century Fox, sourcing material from Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and its sequel, Percy Jackson and the Olympians Sea of Monsters. The pair was met with underwhelming responses from fans of the mythology-inspired young adult novels and critics alike, and were fiercely criticized for their poor adaptations. After confirming the series' new form, the creator made a point of announcing that he will have more creative control.

Riordan assures Percy Jackson hopefuls that the script is off to a solid start, but the stage production still has yet to begin. "We have a couple of important meetings this coming week with the top brass at the studio for the Percy Jackson TV show, so keep your fingers crossed." Riordan wrote in his website's news section. "Everyone who has read the pilot script loves it, but there will be a few additional tweaks we need to make before we send it off to its next stop: the top execs at Disney+. That's normal. In scriptwriting, as in every other kind of writing, you can expect to do many, many drafts!"

The author was grateful for those who had given feedback for his work, expressing how "super positive and helpful" any advice he received was. Acknowledging the wariness that long-time fans of the novels who look to the show for a better representation of the books, Riordan assured that "everyone is committed to making this the best show we possibly can. I remain excited and guardedly optimistic that we are on the verge of getting a really first-rate project off the ground. As always, though, good things require time and patience! Stay tuned!"

There is no set release date, but Percy Jackson and the Olympians will mark its return on Disney+ in 2021, with the first season basing itself off of The Lightning Thief.
