Paul Bettany Addresses 'WandaVision' Surprise Cameo Appearance

Serving as a strong jumping-off point for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, WandaVision (2021-) has not shorted itself on its possibilities, encouraging fans to keep up with their own theories and predictions.

In January of 2021, series star Paul Bettany had commented on a surprise character that was set to make their appearance in the show somehow. He said that this actor was someone that he'd “been wanting to work with forever” and has “real fireworks together.” This was just another way to stoke the fire that set new hypotheses ablaze, but those hopes were quickly short-lived.

In the post-credit scene of the show's eighth episode, the illusion of a new character stepping in was quickly diminished as the actor that Bettany was referring to so eagerly was none other than himself as White Vision. Director Matt Shakman, when asked about the potential backfire from Bettany's comments, jokingly said that "he dug himself this hole. He can get out of it.”

While in an interview with Good Morning America, the conversation circled back to the actor's teasing remarks about this illusionary cameo. "Yeah, you know when you think something's gonna be funny, and you say it," Bettany said, "And then you actually panic about it which is what I did because fans started guessing who it might be, and they were guessing people like Benedict Cumberbatch or Patrick Stewart, and I was thinking, 'God, that's a good idea' and they're gonna be so disappointed when they find out it's me.”

Before running into a frozen screen and a cut-off stream, Bettany sidestepped the question of if there was actually a bigger character on the way that his joke of "himself being the big reveal" was covering up. “Well, you know, I'd love to answer that question, but my service keeps...," he said, unable to finish his statement.

WandaVision is now streaming on Disney+ and will assist in setting up the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
