Sony Pictures is climbing its way up the Marvel Cinematic latter and growing its slate of characters, henceforth expanding their universe. Drifting away from the traditional route of rebooting old titles and reviving fallen heroes, Sony's next big piece of comic book cinema will take an even more sharp turn off the beaten path, and will center around a superheroine for a change.
Olivia Wilde has been set to direct Sony's Spider-Woman, reported by Deadline, though Sony has not released an official statement of confirmation. At her right hand, Katie Silberman will be penning the script. The production team will be founded on "girl-power" across the board, with Amy Pascal and Rachel O'Connor as producers.
Sony has strung a web of spider-people (from Venom to the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), yet there is no "Spider-Woman" character set in stone yet. Those who are familiar with Marvel, specifically the Spider-Man franchise, have been acquainted with Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, and Jessica Drew, the first to don the red-and-yellow suit in the 70s.
This will be Sony's second big picture with a leading lady at the heart of the film, following S.J. Clarkson's Madame Webb movie. Sony is also currently developing more Spider-Man franchise films that will set Black Cat and Silver Sable at their axis.
Wilde isn't the first nor will be the last woman in entertainment to make strides in the comic book cinematic industry, let alone the cinematic industry. She, like Captain Marvel 2 director Nia DaCosta, will follow names such as Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and now The Eternals' Cathy Yan and Chloe Zhao. Between Booksmart and Don't Worry Darling, It's been a wild ride for Wilde, but that won't hinder what she can bring to the table for Spider-Woman.
