In the wake of last week’s Disney Investor Conference, there has been no shortage of big announcements, including footage of the upcoming Ms. Mavel Series on Disney+. The footage from Ms. Marvel didn't reveal much in terms of the plot, but Marvel has now released an official synopsis for the show.
ScreenRant offers up the synopsis, which breaks down the plot of the show. “Kamala Khan — a 16-year-old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City. A great student, avid gamer, and voracious fan-fic scribe, Kamala have a special affinity for Super Heroes, particularly Captain Marvel. However, Kamala struggles to fit in at home and at school — that is, until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life is easier with superpowers, right?”
The plot seems to tie into her comic book backstory, however, they chose to leave out the details on how she gets her power (we won’t spoil it for you). Ms. Marvel will be Marvel's first live-action Muslim hero, increasing the diversity that the comics have been promoting since their conception, and will continue to break boundaries with vibrant new characters.
Marvel Comics fans have been waiting for the day that Kamala would join the MCU almost immediately after her comic debut in 2013. As a Captain Marvel super-fan, a proper introduction for Khan had to wait until Carol Danvers joined the universe, and Brie Larson finally brought the superhero to life in Captain Marvel. Since May 2012, there have been rumors circulating female-centric Marvel projects, which the president of Marvel, Kevin Feige, has now set into motion.
With Carol Danvers firmly established as a powerhouse in the MCU, Marvel Studios confirmed that Khan will be coming soon and The Ms. Marvel Disney+ series was added to the Phase 4 slate with newcomer Iman Vellani landing the coveted lead role. This is Vellani's first-ever acting credit, and she is set to co-star in Captain Marvel 2.
Filming only began a few weeks ago, so there’s not that much to see, but expect big Disney+ news as we roll into 2021.
