The film industry is still facing a tremendous aftershock even after a year of the COVID-19 pandemic and with delays forcing the hand of nearly every big-name studio, there's no given point when movie theaters will be permitted to open at full capacity again.
Disney and Marvel have been hard at work with their next phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving Sony to play catch-up with their collection of Marvel characters. With the future of theatrical releases being up in the air, there is no right answer to if Black Widow (2021) or Eternals (2021), or now Morbius (2022) will hit the big screen anytime soon.
It was announced in early January 2021 that Morbius would shift its release date from March 8, 2021, to October 8, 2021, scraping the tail end of the year before the calendar year drew to a close. According to The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit, it seems like Sony is eyeing an early 2022 date instead.
Presuming that there will be some sort of change that will permit Sony to release their Spider-Man spinoff cinematically, the Jared Leto-starring comic book film will release just one year and one week after the outmost release date for the venom sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Sony's second take at Venom will now release on July 25, 2021. Morbius will release on January 21, 2022.
