Marvel's 'Spider-Man 2' Coming to PS5

The craze around Spider-Man has grown exponentially over the late 2010s after Tom Holland brought Peter Parker into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an animated Spider-Man movie from Sony Pictures Animation fans by surprise, and Insomniac Games released a video game that became an instant classic. With Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy preparing to release its last leg and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse snagging a spot in 2022 for a sequel, Insomniac Games piles on to the excitement with a brand new game.

The news broke from Sony's PlayStation Showcase 2021 that the new game would arrive in 2023 for the PlayStation 5 with a brand new foe: Venom. Both Miles Morales and Peter Parker will be in this game, as Morales was previously introduced into the franchise through Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020). Voice actors Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter will return to voice their respected characters. Game director Ryan Smith and creative director Bryan Intihar will return for the sequel, and the voice of Venom will belong to Tony Todd of Candyman fame.

The first game faced off with almost every Spider-Man villain from the character's 50 years of lore while leaving room for the narrative to leave off on a cliffhanger, teasing more to come in the game saga. The spinoff follows Morales' changing fate after he was bitten by a radioactive spider engineered by Norman Osborn, and is fairly faithful to his comic book origins from 2011.

"While pushing the capabilities of the [PS5] will be very exciting, we’re equally pumped to craft all-new stories for Peter and Miles in this sequel," Insomniac's Ryan Schneider wrote for the PlayStation blog. "Just as in our previous Spider-Man games, we not only want to tell a great Super Hero story, but also deliver a compelling human story, one full of heart and humor that dives deep into the people behind the mask."

Insomniac's reveal is a surprise, but a welcome one to be sure. The game studio also confirmed that have a second game in the works in development that will feature another popular Marvel hero, the Wolverine. The Wolverine game is currently in development and has been confirmed to be a "standalone" game. While the Wolverine game has no forthcoming release date or window, but Spider-Man 2 has been given a 2023 release window.
