Disney Shows for Animation Fans

Big fan of animation and cartoons? Bored during the current state of the world and looking for new(ish) shows to watch? Have we got some knock-out, amazing, totally binge-able shows for you: Amphibia, The Owl House, Big City Greens, and DuckTales (2017). If you’re scratching your head and saying to yourself, “I’ve never heard of these shows,” allow us to enlighten you on what you’ve been missing. Here are some quick quarantine animation fixes from us to you.

Amphibia is a show about Anne, a human girl, who was transported to the strange new world inhabited by sentient, humanoid frogs, toads, and other semi-aquatic races, as well as many horrifying bug and reptilian creatures. Anne is apprehensively taken in by a frog family, known as the Plantars until she can find a way back to the human world. The show is made by Matt Braly, each thirty-minute block consists of two eleven-minute episodes, Brenda Song (perhaps best known as London Tipton from Suite Life of Zack and Cody) voices Anne, and the show is currently airing its second season weekly on Disney Channel.

The Owl House is another Disney Channel show. It’s about Luz, a human girl, who gets accidentally taken to a magical world by a powerful witch named Eda - or Edalyn - the Owl Lady. This show has a thing for owls. Speaking of, the owl house itself is called Hooty, which seems to be a sort of enchanted, sentient door whose body is the house itself; it isn’t really explained. Also, there’s a demon named King (who is voiced by Alex Hirsh, creator of Gravity Falls). The Owl House was created by Dana Terrace, each episode is about twenty-two minutes long, and for the fans of Bojack Horseman, Wendie Malick who voiced Bojack’s abusive mother: Beatrice Horseman, voices Eda.

To wind down a little bit, Big City Greens, created by Chris and Shane Houghton, is about the Green family farmers consisting of Bill and his two kids: Cricket and Tilly moving back to Bill’s mom, Alice’s, a farm which now smacks in the middle of a city called Big City. It’s a small slice of life show that chronicles the adventures of these humble farmers that no longer live in the pseudo-isolation of the countryside but now are forced to experience the cramped and compact life of a large, crowded, bustling city. This is another show that’s thirty-minute block consists of two eleven-minute episodes and is airing weekly on Disney Channel.

Lastly, we have the 2017 remake of DuckTales. This version, like its predecessor, is based on the Uncle Scrooge comics by Carl Barks. Featuring David Tenant (best known for his work in Doctor Who as the tenth iteration of the Doctor) to voice Uncle Scrooge and now actual voice actors for the triplets of Huey, Dewey, and Louie played by Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, and Bobby Moynihan, respectively. Though remakes are dangerous territory - arguably the Cartoon Network remakes of PowerPuff Girls and Teen Titans did not go over well with fans of the original series - but DuckTales (2017) stays true to the heart, soul, and adventuring spirit of the comics and the 1987 iteration that fans care so deeply for.

All these shows are masterfully made, written, and produced for an exemplary enjoyable experience for viewers of all ages. Each one can be watched depending on your mood: looking for action and adventure? DuckTales. Looking to calm down with some silly hijinks? Big City Greens. Looking for both? Amphibia. Looking for both with some magic thrown in? The Owl House! You can watch all of these and more on Disney Channel, Disney+, and Disney XD.
